Hearts

Over the course of three decades, Max made more than 300 distinctive mixed media hearts. Each piece begins with a wooden base, providing a foundation for a rich array of materials, colors, and textures. Max transformed found objects—including welded metal, fabric, and salvaged parts from old pianos, typewriters, and sewing machines—along with paint, buttons, and photographs into these unique works. Ranging in size from 8" x 8" to 2' x 2' and approximately 2" deep, these pieces run the gamut of Max's aesthetic sensibility: From intricate and sophisticated to folksy and dad joke-y.
